Shopping Centre unveils major revamp
The Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield celebrated the completion of a multi-million pound makeover yesterday, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by the City’s Mayor.
The Ridings officially unveiled a host of structural and cosmetic changes including three striking new glass entrances, a re-designed food court complete with new feature lifts, a new café and improvements to the public realm at Cathedral Walk.
The Mayor was joined by Wakefield council members and local business representatives for the ceremony, which was held at the centre’s brand new Café Lavazza. Guests were treated to a sumptuous reception with delicious afternoon tea canapés, accompanied by classical music from local harpist, Fiona-Katie Roberts.
Speaking about The Riding’s makeover Mayor of Wakefield, Cllr Jacqui Williams, said: “It was a real honour to officially open the new look Ridings.
“During these difficult economic times, it is great to not only see people investing money, but investing in Wakefield to ultimately improve business and retail opportunties for citizens for years to come.”
Mark Holmes of Moorfield Group, the Investment and asset manager of Moorfield Real Estate Fund which owns the Centre, added: “The Ridings remains an integral part of the Wakefield community, and has been the city’s principal shopping centre for more than twenty five years. The refurbishment works build on The Riding’s already solid reputation and will enable the centre to face the retail challenges of the next twenty five years. We look forward to this brand new era in the centre’s history.”
Located in Wakefield’s prime retail area, The Ridings originally opened in 1983 and represents the City’s principal shopping centre. The completion of the multi million pound works are a further sign of Moorfield’s ongoing investment in the centre, and reflect the high level of interest in Wakefield from a host of popular fashion retailers.
